Practice day trading on nights and weekends
US stock exchanges are closed at night and on weekends, so a paper account on the live market has nothing to trade then. A replay of a real past day does: Hindsight Markets plays a past trading day back as if it were live, from the 4:00 a.m. pre-market to the end of after-hours, whenever you open it. You can trade a Tuesday morning on a Saturday afternoon.
Why the market's hours get in the way
US stocks trade from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET in the regular session, with the pre-market before it and after-hours after it, Monday to Friday. Small-cap momentum is busiest in the first hours of the morning. If you work during those hours, or live in another time zone, the moments worth practising happen while you are somewhere else.
How a replay fits your hours
- Any time of day. Open a past trading day at night or on a weekend and it plays as if it were live.
- Start where it matters. At the 4:00 a.m. pre-market, at the 9:30 bell, or at any time you type, up to 7:59 p.m. ET.
- Skip the quiet parts. Run at 2, 3, 5 or 10 times speed through a slow stretch, and at half speed while a stock is moving fast.
- Stop when you need to. Pause, step a bar at a time, or jump to the minute before a move.
You can open every trading day from August 2026 forward, and each new trading day is added overnight, so on a Saturday Friday's session is already there.
A weekend session, step by step
- Pick a day from the week. The recaps list what moved each day, if you want a day with a runner in it.
- Start at 9:00 a.m., set your account the way you would fund it, and open a gainers scan.
- Trade the first hour as if it were live. No skipping ahead to see how it ends.
- Review each trade in the journal, then go back to the entry and take the decision again.
An evening example: POM after the bell, 21 October 2026
Some of the biggest moves happen when most day traders have stopped watching. POM paused at 3:30 p.m. at 2.00, and the pause ran until 4:00 p.m., when it reopened at 3.01. After hours it ran to 5.89 at 6:54 p.m. It traded 11.58 million shares between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m., more than the 9.33 million from 4:00 a.m. to the close. You can replay that evening on a weekend at whatever speed you like. The whole day is on the POM runner page.
Make weekend practice count
Weekend practice is only as good as the habits it builds. Trade one plan, at the size you would trade, and count your first attempt at each day. Keep the speed near live for the moments you are practising; at 10 times speed you are watching, not trading. And remember the result is a practice result: what the fill model does and leaves out is on the disclaimer page.
Common questions
- Can you day trade on weekends?
- Not US stocks: the exchanges are closed on Saturday and Sunday. You can practise on weekends by replaying a real past trading day, which plays back as if it were live.
- Can I practice day trading at night?
- Yes, on a replay. A past trading day plays from the pre-market to after-hours whenever you open it, so the morning session can be practised at 10 p.m. your time.
- Does the replay include pre-market and after-hours?
- Yes. A replay starts as early as 4:00 a.m. ET and runs through after-hours, with the full order book and the tape.
- Which days can I replay?
- Every trading day from August 2026 forward. Each new trading day is added overnight, so Friday's session is ready on Saturday.
- Is practising on a replay as good as practising live?
- It is the same market data, and you can practise far more often. It cannot reproduce the pressure of real money, so treat the results as practice.
